Inspiration
Amazon Prime Girls Back View.png

My inspiration is drawn from corrugated shipping boxes that have been delivered to my home and those of my friends and neighbors who have ordered packages and other goods during the past several months.

My cardboard creations were born as I observed the dramatic increase in deliveries every day throughout the neighborhood as people remain at home.

Coming from a family of artists, I have been sculpting and working with clay and ceramics for decades, as well as painting canvases using the remnants of small paint cans purchased at Home Depot for just $.50 each. The materials I have used throughout this project are Amazon, Walmart, Macy's, and Costco shipping cartons, corrugated sheets and bracing, popsicle sticks, Elmer's Glue, Amazon packing materials, Dole peach jars, small plastic wrapping from various containers, and even a couple of wine cork tops.

I wanted to focus on the beauty and empowerment of women and young girls for these creations, including my daughters. “It was as if women and girls were calling out to me. I could see them and hear them, and I felt as if I knew each of them, who they are, what they like, their strengths and vulnerabilities,."“

They demanded to be drawn and created. The girls were in my mental queue as individual three girl groups, and one by one they demanded to be moved to the front of the line to be sketched and brought to life.

Hence, I began to experiment by applying paint to the cardboard, and as the material moistened it began to transform in both shape and texture, the same way ceramics shift when fired. In turn, the cardboard stretched and plied as if it were skin. Once this happened, hundreds of images came flooding in and I began to sketch madly as if not to miss any of her girls’ images. During the first day, I drew 100 girls’ images and have since drawn many more.

The most amazing response is that young girls and women of all ages can identify with these cardboard creations on such a personal level. They see a part of themselves in each girl, they see who they are, who they would like to be, and who they might become.” They intimately connect with one of the girls and say, that’s me!”
